Cthulhu: Death May Die
Another very successful game placed in the universe created by H. Q. Lovecrtaft – this time we are dealing with something like a tactical adventure.
The first contact with the game is very positive. The large box houses a lot of high-quality figurines, a few are really big – especially the figures of the Ancients, with which we will fight, stand out.
Before each session, we choose which of the Ancients will be our main opponent – in the stand we have a choice of Cthulu or Hastur. This determines the type of their minor henchmen who will roam the board and make our lives miserable, but also each of the main antagonists introduces different effects.
The next step is to choose one of six scenarios and arrange the board as described. Finally, the most important thing, i.e. the choice of our hero – there are several different characters to choose from, each with its own, not too long story placed on the back of each character board. Each of the researchers has 3 skills that can be developed at their discretion, and which determine our style of play. In addition, during the game you can get various items or companions who give their own bonus effects.
Visually, the game looks beautiful. We are dealing with a large amount of plastic, the figures are characterized by a large degree of detail. The graphics on the modularly arranged board are very atmospheric and help to empathize with the climate of danger.
When it comes to difficulty, the game is definitely easier, for example, than Eldritch Horror. I would describe the level of difficulty as generally average, it is not difficult to win the scenario, but there is also a palpable threat of failure. It is also much more tactical and faster, player turns take place smoothly and efficiently. This is also due to the fact that in Cthulu DMD there is quite little text to read, and a lot of combat and tactical gameplay.
pros ++++++
+ gorgeous figurines in large quantities
+ generally graphic design, making up the WOW effect
+ you can grade the difficulty of individual scenarios min. by choosing the ancient
+ easy rules, quick player turns
+ a large number of diverse characters
+ each scenario is a unique board, items and events
+ practical and nice molding
+ very pleasant dungeon crawler, set in the atmosphere of Lovecraft’s novel
Cons —
– it seems that there could be more scenarios
– it may be too easy for the winners
– after playing six games (there are six scenarios in the box), we are left with only a small modification of the variety of games (you can play with different researchers, against one of the two available Ancients)
